On Wednesday October 7th headline events were held in London, Manchester & Birmingham with teams from across the UK and the rest of the world joining in running a complete marathon in 200m sections.

Currently at the top of the Any Age leader board are the team from Rushcliffe AC Antelopes who completed their marathon challenge on Tuesday 6th October during their training session clocking a time of 1:50.08. The under 13’s who completed the marathon were also joined by seven teams of 8 athletes who took on the role of pace makers for the Under 13’s whilst completing their own 5000m challenge with the fastest team completing the 5000m in 16:20.

The race between London & Manchester is always exciting and this year saw Thomas Tallis & Southend (London) finish within 40 seconds of each other. The race was well and truly neck & neck all the way and the encouragement provided by Teachers, Students and staff at Lee Valley Athletics Centre was inspirational. Thomas Tallis are currently the fastest school team in the world having clocked 1:51.11 beating Southend who clocked 1:51.45. It was particularly pleasing to see new teams competing in London and in Manchester. Helsby High who have been involved in the World Marathon Challenge since its inception clocked yet another fast time finishing in 1:55.04.

Outside of the UK teams from Ireland, Estonia, France, Czech Republic & Canada have already completed their Marathon Challenge and results are still coming in.

There is still time to submit your results for the World Marathon Challenge which is simple and inexpensive to set up. Here’s how the event works:

  • Stage your event on a running track or field. The marathon distance is divided into sections of 200m.
  • Teams are made up of 26 to 36 runners – each person completes up to 9 sections.
  • Results are logged on our World Leader board.
  • The challenge: try to beat the world marathon record!

You can keep up with the results and news by sharing your photos and race results on social media @EvequeWMC & @SportshallUK using the hashtag #WMC on both Facebook and Twitter.
